Budded Cross
The Budded Cross is also know as the Apostles Cross, Disciples
Cross, the Trefoil Cross, Bottony Cross or the Cathedral Cross.
A budded cross is generally a Latin
cross with each end cap consisting of a three pronged bud. This end
cap is often a
fleur de lis design. Sometimes the end cap is a three-leaf clover
end cap. These end caps must contain three prongs or element because
they are used to represent the
Trinity or Godhead. Some go so far as to use these three buds to
represent the great bible virtues of Faith, Hope and Love. The three
buds as end caps is where the reference of Trefoil or Treflee come
into play representing the symbolism of three.
Other Christian symbolism for the
Disciples Cross or Budded Cross is a connection with Aaron's staff
that budded and was preserved in the Ark of the Covenant, showing
that life can emerge from death. It also represents the buds of a
flower where there is no guarantee the the buds will bloom but we
have faith that they will. The faith is rewarded with a beautiful
flower.
Since there are four arms, each with
three buds, another name of this cross is the Apostles' Cross,
with one bud for each of the twelve disciples. The bible frequently
refers to the Apostles as disciples so it also is called an Apostles
Cross or Disciples Cross. |

Orthodox Crosses
The Orthodox Cross originates from Eastern Europe
and Greece. There are a few styles of the orthodox cross. We only
present one style.
This style has a trefoil
(meaning three) bud on the end caps of the cross. These trefoil buds
are anciently derived from the lotus flower and/or the pomegranate
bud probably using the same symbolism as the budded cross. The Lotus
Flower is a symbol used in many religions.

This Orthodox Cross Pendant is similar to the Cathedral cross
discussed just above. It has the same budded or trefoil end cap.
This version of the Orthodox cross lacks the lines and the
Greek letters of IC XC. |
Orthodox Cross
One version of the Orthodox Cross has lines and the letters IC XC.
About the Orthodox Cross Lines:
The Top line symbolically represents the headboard. The bottom line
represents the footrest. The bottom line is angled to the left
pointing to the "righteous" criminal who said to Jesus: "remember me
when you come into your kingdom".
The letters IC XC
found at the end of the main arm of most Eastern Orthodox Crosses
represent the name of Jesus Christ in Greek. |

This Cross pendant is an excellent example of a cross that fits into
more than one class of crosses. This style of the Disciples cross is
also a form of the Orthodox cross. Additionally this Cross pendant has a
filigree design filling in the body of the cross. This Eastern Orthodox
Cross also lacks the lines and Greek letters. |

Latin or Western Crosses
Also known as the Chapel Cross or Church Cross.
The Latin Cross is also referred to as
the traditional Western Cross to differentiate it from the crosses
popular in the East. Because many Christian Churches have a floor
plan that resembles the Western or Latin Cross is has come to be
known as the Chapel Cross or Church Cross. It is by design a simple
cross. It is similar to the Greek cross except that the vertical bar
is longer than the horizontal bar. With time, Artisans have added
some decorative design to the Latin Cross. These types of crosses
are often non denominational and very popular. |

This Byzantine style is reminiscent of 4th century Byzantine style of
crosses.
For many the

Cross of life. |

For Many Celtic
Cross Charms and Pendants
The Celts were originally pagans. When they were converted to
Christianity they were required to give up there symbolisms and
adopt Christian symbols, particularly the Christian cross. They were
reluctant to give up their signs and symbols. As a compromise they
created the Christian Cross with Celtic symbols on them. The Celtic
Cross is also know as the Irish High Cross. It has been adopted
widely in Christianity and is now just as popular as any other style
of Cross.
Other
symbolism of this cross relates to the four directions. East is
rebirth, youth, Spring, and growth. West is knowledge, experience,
Autumn, and guidance. South is vitality, vigor, Summer, and
strength. North is wisdom, silence, winter, and death. The circle
connects them in the cycle of life.
