The most popular symbols used in Christianity are the Fish and Cross. Both of these symbols had non Christian origins prior to their use by Christians.

Jesus Christ used the fish in many sermons and performed many miracles with fish. It became natural for the fish to represent Christianity. For about 200 to 300 years after Christ the symbol of the fish was widely used.

Some stories even mention that while the Christians were persecuted by the Romans they would use the fish as a means of determining who was Christian and who was not. They did this by drawing a half of the simple fish curved line. If the other person was a Christian they would complete the fish by drawing in the sand the other half making the full fish symbol.

Some articles state that the Cross sign started to become popular around 200 AD, others indicate it was around 300 AD when the cross became a symbol for the early Church. Some ancient texts tell of Christians crossing themselves either on the forehead or chest.

Most agree that the sign or symbol of the Cross was looked down upon because of the association of the cross with torture and death. Over the years this thinking gave way to the meaning of the cross as Christ's sacrifice, atonement and overcoming death. As this way of thinking gain popularity the sign of the fish gave way to the sign of the Cross.
